The LSB is responsible for overseeing and coordinating work by the legal services regulatory bodies to empower consumers and improve transparency in the legal services market.
We have established a new group, the Market Transparency Co-ordination and Oversight Group (MTCOG). We will use this group to coordinate activity by the legal services regulatory bodies, facilitate collaboration and monitor and assess progress in the market.
This group is attended by senior representatives from the legal services regulatory bodies, the Legal Services Consumer Panel and is chaired by the LSB.
The terms of reference for the group are set out here.
Ongoing work
The programme of work undertaken by the group is informed by the recommendations made by the Competition and Markets Authority in 2016 and 2020 about how to improve competition in the legal services market.
The LSB has issued a statement of policy on empowering consumers. The expectations in the statement will also inform the work of the group.
Key workstreams currently include:
- Development of a regulatory information service, following the CMA’s recommendation that the regulators consider developing a single digital register of regulated legal services providers
- A cross-sector public legal education strategy
